Huge hotels can also be found in the larger cities of Colombia. Of course it is much nicer to catch the small-scale hostels! These are closer to the center and here you also have contact with the locals. In Colombia, a breakfast is often prepared in front of you. In this blog we give you overnight tips for the perfect hostels in Colombia.
CARTAGENA
Cartagena is a great city. You have to stay here for minimum 3 nights. You can find everything you can do in Cartagena here. We recommend you to stay in the Getsemani district. This district is very authentic with beautiful graffiti art and a lot of restaurants and the Plaza de La Trinidad square. From Getsemani you can walk to the historical centre of Cartagena: Centro Historico.
CASA RELAX
Just behind Plaza de la Trinidad is the hostel Casa Relax. As soon as the entrance gate is opened for you, you enter a small courtyard with about 10 rooms. A big plus of this hostel is the swimming pool. You will need this in Cartagena, as it is very hot in this city. The employees are very friendly and they will make you a delicious, healthy breakfast every morning. Casa Relax is very popular so book this hostel in time!
MANGLAR 421
For the first or last night it is nice to spend the night close to the airport. Hotel Manglar 421 is highly recommended for this. You won’t get better. Manglar 421 is run by a Colombian couple who do everything for the guests. We have never been so well cared for abroad. There are rooms with private bathroom and shared bathroom. Within 5 minutes you are at the airport and you are often brought by the lovely owners themselves. Drinks and snacks such as chips / cookies are sold here. You can also get breakfast in the morning against a fee. We stayed here for only 1 night and were treated like family. At checkout we were also surprised by some small gifts from the owners. And that all for less than € 20.
TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK
When you visit Tayrona National Park, you won’t carry your backpack or suitcase. That is why we advise you to spend the night nearby before you visit Tayrona National Park. Once arrived in Tayrona Park there is so much to see that it is a shame if you are only there for one day. You can also easily score a place to stay in the park itself.
ECO HOSTAL YULUKA
This is the hostel where you should definitely stay during your tour! Eco Hostal Yuluka is a 15-minute walk from the entrance of Tayrona National Park. Here you’ll stay in super nice houses in the middle of nature. Not an alarm clock that wakes you up in the morning, but the sound of the birds and monkeys. You can listen to this for hours in a hammock on your balcony. You can also enjoy a delicious dinner at the hostel for a small price.
CAMPING ARRECIFES
You can reach Camping Arrecifes by walking 1.5 hour from the entrance. Unfortunately, a sleeping place cannot be reserved prior to the trip. Camping Arrecifes rents tents and hammocks. We have chosen a hammock to make our experience even more adventurous. We’ve paid 34.500 COP (€ 9,80) p.p. for a night in a hammock. You can get a key for a locker against a deposit of 10,000 COP (€ 2.83) per locker. The campsite also has clean toilets and (open) showers. There is also a restaurant where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. For one main course you will pay around 30,000 COP (€ 8.50). In the evening there is a cozy campfire. In addition, there is no strong wind here and your hammock does not become wet, as is the case at the Cabo San Juan campsite.
MEDELLÍN
El Poblado is the nicest and safest neighborhood to stay in Medellín. Here you will find many restaurants and hostels. In the evening, the nightlife of Parque Lleras starts. You can party well here, but you can also have a drink on a terrace in complete safety. The El Poblado metro station can be easily reached on foot.
YOLO HOSTEL
Do you want a perfect and affordable stay in the best area of Medellín? Then go for the YOLO hostel. You may scroll quickly when you see the name YOLO hostel, but you may change your mind if you know the story behind it. YOLO hostel is from the owner Federico. He used to be in class with Pablo Escobar’s son. As a result, he has experienced a lot up from close. He would rather not talk about this anymore, since a lot is already being invented about Pablo Escobar for commercial purposes. Federico was abducted a few years later. He suffered a lot of damage from this. He was about to go the wrong way because of the pain he suffered, but he has moved London for safety. Here he came back to himself and decided to do only good things in life. This puts his “You Only Live Once” hostel in a completely different perspective. Federico supports young people in a better future.
You can reserve a bed in a dorm, but you can also book private rooms. There is a relaxed vibe and everything can be arranged for you. If you book the YOLO hostel, then you have a standard breakfast included. This breakfast is served at the neighbors: Betty’s Bowls. Here you can get healthy sandwiches, smoothie bowls, smoothies and coffees. It couldn’t be more perfect!!
