Islands are fun! A visit to Hvar, the neighboring island of Brač, has to be on your list! You will find luxury yachts, big villas and beautiful bays here. HOW DO YOU GET THERE?
The boat from Brač to the island of Hvar departs from the port of Bol. The Jadrolinija company takes you from Brač to Hvar in 45 minutes. The ferry moors in the port of Jelsa for 35 Kuna (4,70eu) or in Hvar Town for 100 Kuna (13,50eu). It is wise to buy the tickets online in high season. You can buy a single ticket or a return ticket. HVAR AND TOURISM
If you love colored houses, endless old alleys that lead to a harbor with terraces, then a visit to Hvar should not be missed! We have experienced this as one of the nicest places. The island is also called the Saint-Tropez of Croatia since it is very popular with the jet set. Celebrities such as George Clooney, Beyoncé and Daniël Craig also visit the island regularly. It is therefore not surprising that there is a vibrant nightlife to be found, but we did not get much of this. We enjoyed the beauty and the delicious food!
HVAR AND THE LOCALS
Hvar is known for its idyllic harbors and jet set. But for the locals the island is less fun. Life on Hvar is very expensive for them, since not much can be grown on the island. They work the entire summer season. They should mainly focus on tourism. In the winter there is no money to be made so they have to pay the bills with the earned money of the summer season. The water pipes run from Dubrovnik and Split to Hvar. The Bura comes along in winter. This is the strongest wind on the east coast of the Adriatic Sea. In the winter it costs around 300eu to heat a house. That is why many locals also decide to move during the winter season. The houses are very expensive here. You’ll pay around 2-3 million euros for a 3-storey house.
THE PLACE TO BE
STARI GRAD
Most tourists arrive in the port of Stari Grad. Do not travel straight away, but visit this beautiful old city. This is even the oldest city in Croatia! Don’t have time for an overnight stay? Then at least have a drink and stroll through the old streets.
JELSA
Are you traveling from Brac to Hvar? Then you will arrive at the port of Jelsa. A small cute village with a few restaurants and accommodation options. Here the nightlife is also starting. A good vibe to get ready for Hvar Town!
HVAR TOWN
27 km away is Hvar town. This is the absolute place to be if you ask us. In this place you can stroll through the streets and along the boulevard. A small beach is available at the Franciscan Monastery. From here you can easily walk to the other side of the town. Are you in a sporty mood? Then walk to Hvar Fortica. This fort can already be seen from the harbor. You will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the Pakleni islands. If you stay a few nights in Hvar, you can also go to one of the Pakleni islands for a day. Boats sail to this islands every 15 minutes.
