Ubud is also called the cultural heart of Bali. Once arrived in Ubud you don’t understand why it was given that name. You are quickly stuck with the car, the scooters pass you from all sides and it’s very chaotic. Fortunately, there are many breathtaking and calm places in the area of Ubud. That is why Ubud is the perfect base to visit these places. With a visit to the following places you will have great days in Ubud!
CAMPUHAN RIDGE WALK
The Campuhan Ridge Walk can be found at a maximum of fifteen minutes walking distance from the center of Ubud. This walk can’t be missed. We advise you to walk early in the morning. The sun rises slowly and it is still a bit foggy. It is a beautiful view. In addition, it is nice and quiet early in the morning. The most beautiful route is approximately 1 kilometer. At the end of the trail is a cafe where you can take a rest and enjoy the beautiful view of the rice fields while enjoying a fresh coconut.
Entrance to the Campuhan Ridge Walk is free.
CYCLING TO THE TEGALALANG RICE FIELDS
We cycled to the Tegalalang rice fields on two cramped children’s bicycles. The Tegalalang rice fields are about 9.5 km one way from Ubud center. The roads along the way are generally good. Sometimes there is a huge climb and a gap in the road. This made our cycle tour truly an adventure. We downloaded the google maps app for the route. We cycled through villages where without any tourists. Smiling and waving locals encouraged us to continue our way. After 1.5 hours we saw the rice fields of Tegalalang. Here we walked the hiking trail for an hour. The rice fields are at their best at the end of August / beginning of September.
Here you pay 6000 Rupiah per person, which comes to around € 0.40.
MONKEY FOREST UBUD
Are you staying in or near the center of Ubud? Then you can reach Monkey Forest on foot. This is a 15-minute walk from the center. The Monkey Forest is a large park with a temple complex. About 340 monkeys of the macaque species live here. There are also many types of trees. It is a large park but you can see the most in an hour. Sometimes the monkeys will jump on your shoulders or bag. Bananas are also sold, but the monkeys get very aggressive sometimes and there is also excess weight involved, because you have to imagine that the park attracts around 10,000 tourists a day. If they all buy bananas, the health of the greedy monkeys will not do well.
The entrance fee is 50,000 Rupiah per person, € 3.11.
VISIT THE PURU ULUN DANU BRATAN
At the Bratan crater lake is a temple called Pura Ulun Danu Bratan. This is approximately an hour’s drive from Ubud. This temple is unique compared to the other temples, since it is located on a large lake with a beautiful view.
The lake lies at an altitude of 1239 meters between the mountains Often there are low clouds and it is a little cooler. Yet in the summer you can still visit this temple in summer clothing.
The Pura Ulun Danu Bratan was built in the 17th century for the goddess of water, Dewi Danau. The different towers (meru) were built in 3 floors for the gods Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu and Dewi Danau.
You don’t have to wear a sarong when you visit this temple. The entrance is 5000 Rupiah per person € 0.50.
NUNG NUNG WATERFALL
Before our trip to Bali we already made a list of the excursions that we would like to do from Ubud. On that list we wrote a visit to the
Tegenungan waterfall. The owner of our guesthouse told us that this waterfall has become very touristy over the years. He advised us to visit a much nicer and undiscovered waterfall called the NungNung. Well, let’s do this! Let’s go to the NungNung waterfall!
To face this beauty, we first had to walk 500 steps down. The steps were very uneven and slippery with water at the end of the path. You can hear the sound of the water from afar. The sound pulls you to the waterfall. After a few slips, we finally arrived at the heart of mother nature, the NungNung waterfall.
When we’ve reached the waterfall, various thoughts went through my mind. What a beauty! There was a light breeze, the waterfall caused a dampening shower over my body and I smelled the purity of nature. It can give you a good energy!
Entrance 5,000 Rupiah per person € 0.50.
PURA TAMAN AYUN
In about a 40-minute drive from Ubud you can visit the Pura Taman Ayun. Pura means temple and Taman Ayun stands for beautiful garden. The temple owes its name to the huge garden around the temple. This is also one of the most beautiful temples of Bali. It is a family temple built for the main gods and their ancestors. Also when visiting this temple you don’t have to wear a sarong.
The entrance 15,000 Rupiah per person € 0.93.
JATILUWIH RIJSTVELDEN
The most beautiful rice fields in Bali can be found in Jatiluwih. These are a little further from Ubud than the Tegalalang rice fields, but it is definitely worth it. There are also hiking trails at these rice fields. The entire trail takes about an hour. There are steps of sand and here again uneven steps. When it has just rained, it is very drizzly and wet. People with mobility problems can certainly visit the beautiful rice fields, but they have to walk at the top of the rice fields. There are a few restaurants established and often in buffet form. Here you pay around € 11 per person for. For Balinese terms it is really expensive for a lunch. Bring some lunch or go for a warung after or before your visit to Jatiluwih.
Entrance: 50.000 Rupiah p.p. € 3,11.
